چکیده

Earlier findings in Shue et al. (2007, 2008) raised questions about the alignment of nuclear pitch accents in American English, which are addressed here by eliciting both high and low pitch accents in two different target words in several different positions in a single-phrase utterance (early, late but not final, and final) from 20 speakers (10 male, 10 female). Results show that the F0 peak associated with a high nuclear pitch accent is systematically displaced to an earlier point in the target word if that word is final in the phrase and thus bears the boundary-related tones as well. This effect of tonal crowding holds across speakers, genders and target words, but was not observed for low accents, adding to the growing evidence that low targets behave differently from highs. Analysis of energy shows that, across target words and genders, the average energy level of a target word is greatest at the start of an utterance and decreases with increasing proximity to the utterance boundary. Duration measures confirms the findings of existing literature on main-stress-syllable lengthening, final syllable lengthening, and lengthening associated with pitch accents, and reveals that final syllable lengthening is further enhanced if the final word also carries a pitch accent. Individual speaker analyses found that while most speakers conformed to the general trends for pitch movements there were 2/10 male and 1/10 female speakers who did not. These results show the importance of taking into account prosodic contexts and speaker variability when interpreting correlates to prosodic events such as pitch accents. 2009 Elsevier B.V. Modeling and synthesis of English regional accents with pitch and duration correlates

This paper provides an introduction to the acoustic–phonetic structure of English regional accents and presents a signal processing method for the modeling and transformation of the acoustic correlates of English accents for example from British English to American English. The focus of this paper is on the modeling of intonation and duration correlates of accents as the modeling of formants is...

The Phonetics of Final Pitch Accents in American English Polar Questions

In an ongoing corpus study we have found that polar questions in American English tend to be low rising, characterized by a low final pitch accent followed by a rise to the end of the utterance. A study of a minority pattern of questions with a high final pitch accent followed by a rise reveals that such pitch accents often fall on a type of word that is typically unaccented, thus raising the q...

Effects of intonational phrase boundaries on pitch-accented syllables in american English

Recent studies of the acoustic correlates of various prosodic elements in American English, such as prominence (in the form of phrase-level pitch accents and word-level lexical stress) and boundaries (in the form of boundary-marking tones), have begun to clarify the nature of the acoustic cues to different types and levels of these prosodic markers. This study focuses on the importance of contr...

Acoustic correlates of primary and secondary stress in North American English

This study investigates the acoustic correlates of the distinction between primary and secondary stress in English in accented and unaccented morphologically complex words that are either left-prominent or right-prominent (e.g. "violate vs. vio"lation). In both accented and unaccented words, the position of primary and secondary stress significantly influences F0, intensity, and spectral bala...

Intonation Components in short English Statements

In this study we attempt to identify the basic components of statement intonation as related t o focus, accent and lexical stress in General American English. Instead of viewing f 0 contours as direct acoustic correlates of intonation components, we regard them as the outcome of implementing different functional components of intonation under various articulatory constraints. Eight American Eng...
